Aqueduct Park proposal

Barwon Water plans to establish a 66-hectare park around the heritage-listed Barwon River Ovoid Sewer Aqueduct.

Under the proposal, the community would be able to enjoy the environmental and recreational values of the Barwon River, as well as the significant history of the aqueduct.

Access under and on the 100-year-old aqueduct has been prohibited since the mid-1990s due to its unsafe condition. To enable safe access, removal of limited sections is proposed, with the most of the structure to be retained.

The ambitious parkland proposal on the north side of the river provides for walking tracks, viewing platforms, interpretative signage and seating.

Barwon Water has been working closely with the Barwon River Parklands Steering Committee, Heritage Victoria and other agencies on the proposal.

Barwon Water will seek feedback from the broader community and key stakeholders such as the Wadawurrung, recreational, environmental and heritage groups.

Consultation will be open from late January to early March, 2017.
