How much water has been extracted from the Anglesea borefield since it was built in 2009?

The Anglesea borefield had been operated for testing and maintenance purposes to ensure the infrastructure and technology was operating correctly.  This operation also provided Barwon Water an opportunity to test and review its environmental triggers. 

In total, Barwon Water has extracted just over 7,618 megalitres (ML). 

  • 2009/2010: 1,651 ML was pumped to ensure all infrastructure was operating correctly.
  • 2010/2011: 1,948 ML was pumped to ensure all infrastructure was operating correctly. 
  • 2011/2012: 4,019 ML additional water was pumped to test and review our environmental triggers. 
  • 2012 to July 2019: no pumping.

All water extracted was in line with our bulk entitlement allocations.  The water extracted was supplemented into our drinking water system to ensure it was used and not wasted. 

How much groundwater will Barwon Water take from the Anglesea borefield?

Extraction amounts will be dependent on a range of data including (but not limited to) protection of the environment, surface water storage levels and rainfall forecast, and will be in line with the environmental protections under the bulk entitlement.

What if dry conditions continue? Can the Anglesea borefield and the Melbourne to Geelong Pipeline provide enough water?

The Melbourne to Geelong Pipeline and Anglesea borefield can supplement surface (rainwater) storages. However, if it remains dry over winter and spring, and even with our diversified supply sources activated, we may all have to do more. We might have to ask you to curb your demand even further – maybe even introduce water restrictions.

Will there be additional costs for customers as a result of switching on the borefield?

There will be no additional cost to Barwon Water customers as a result of switching on the Anglesea borefield.

Current prices are locked in until June 2023, and are approved by the Essential Services Commission – the independent regulator of the water industry.

What has caused fish death events in the Anglesea River?

Extended dry periods followed by rainfall events result in a flush of acidic water into the Anglesea River, this has been the cause of fish death events in the river. The frequency of acid and fish death events has increased with the increased frequency of extended dry periods.
Low pH events have been recorded since 1972 and fish death events were recorded in 2000 and 2007, which is prior to construction of the borefield.
Issues regarding low flows and pH in the Anglesea River are not linked to operations of the Anglesea borefield.
