Apollo Bay Basin storage capacity improvements

11 February 2025

The Apollo Bay system relies solely on the nearby Barham River for water supply. Water is extracted from the river in winter and spring and stored in two small off-stream storages.

The stored water can be drawn upon over the summer and autumn periods to supply demands when there are typically low flow volumes available in the river.

In 2022, we explored innovative ideas to optimise our storage capacity at the Apollo Bay Basin. With some small changes, we were able to increase storage capacity by 21 million litres. This gives us more water to be used over the summer and autumn period, where the demand for water is greatest.

With forecast growth in Apollo Bay, and potential impacts of a changing climate, we’re taking action within the next decade to maintain a reliable supply of water over the long-term to support a vibrant and sustainable region.
