Barwon Heads sewer upgrade takes step forward

28 June 2024

In May 2024 multiple Barwon Water teams and contractors worked together to complete a vital step in the Barwon Heads sewer upgrade project.

The project team connected the temporary sewerage pipeline to the sewer system at the intersection of Sheepwash Road and Geelong Road, Barwon Heads in a marathon effort that took more than 20 hours.

The temporary sewerage pipeline, known as a bypass, diverts sewer flow allowing us to safely remove and replace the existing sewer pipeline under Geelong Road.

The recent overnight works were complicated by the fragile nature of the existing pipeline and the need to connect the bypass to the sewer system two metres underground.

The sewer system under Barwon Heads carries all sewage from the Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale communities.

Subject to weather conditions, 1.6 kilometres of sewerage pipeline under Geelong Road, Barwon Heads (between the Barwon River and pump station on Geelong Road) is scheduled to be removed and replaced by late 2024.
