August 2025 project update

21 August 2025

Carpark and walking trails

We’re continuing our planning for the last phase of construction at Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk, supported by the Victorian Government Nature Fund.

We now have the required Cultural Heritage and planning permits, and the next step is to engage contractors for the construction of a new public carpark and walking trails. A gravel carpark for up to 32 vehicles and an all-weather walking trail loop will be established to provide public access throughout the site.

We’re expecting construction to commence on site in late 2025. We’ll be in touch with you ahead of construction commencing.

This work will involve creating a new driveway entrance into Swan Bay Road, so there’ll be some local traffic controls in place to ensure safety while this component of the works is being completed.

Friends of Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk

The Friends of Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk group is helping us with weeding and bush regeneration, led by Bellarine Catchment Network (BCN). The group has been targeting South African Weed Orchids and Cat’s Ears for removal.

BCN has also been working with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners’ Gobata Dja team on removing Blackberry, Pittosporum, Stinkweed, Polygala Myrtifolia, Agapanthus and English Broom.

We’ve counted 177 distinct plant species on site, however only around 100 of these species are indigenous to Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk. These local species include important orchids, lilies and grasses that we’ll seek to nurture.

Opening to the general public

We’re expecting to officially open the site to the wider public in early 2026 following the completion of the carpark and walking trails. We’ll keep the community informed via the web page and local newspapers. We look forward to celebrating the opening of this new cultural and environmental place with you!
