December 2025 project update

17 December 2025

What’s been happening on site?

The Bellarine Catchment Network has been busy caring for the site and keeping an eye on the incredible biodiversity emerging in the area. Their recent visits have uncovered some exciting finds, including the discovery of Smooth Parrot Pea, a plant that’s not commonly seen in the region.

Native wildlife has also been making its presence known. In September, an Eastern Snake-necked Turtle was spotted (see photo below), and the site has been alive with birdlife. We’ve seen Spotted Pardalotes to waterbirds like pied stilts. Insects are flourishing too, with species such as the Willow-herb Day-moth adding to the growing list of inhabitants.

These sightings are a great reminder of the environmental value of the site and the importance of ongoing care as we prepare for its official opening.

Construction commencing

Due to the upcoming construction of a new site entrance, upgrade of the car park and walking trails, the official opening of the Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk site will now take place mid to late 2026. More time is needed to complete works before we can open the site to the community.

The works are expected to commence in the new year and will make it easier for the community to visit and enjoy the site. These works have been carefully planned to minimise impact on surrounding neighbours. The construction site is located away from residential areas, and we’ll notify all our neighbours of any potential impacts during construction before it begins.

In addition to the on-ground works, we are developing interpretive signage that clearly communicates the site’s environmental and Cultural values. The signage will explain the rehabilitation works currently underway and explicitly acknowledge the site’s historical and ongoing significance to Wadawurrung People. This is intended to provide accurate context, support public understanding, and assert Wadawurrung presence, knowledge and connection to Country.
