Vision and masterplan project update

21 November 2023

How do I pronounce Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk?

The environmental and community place planned for the former Bellarine Basin at the corner of Grubb and Swan Bay roads is named Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk, meaning ‘headwaters of continuous flowing river’ in Wadawurrung language.

We say it like this: Mirk Newb-itch Yeah-rem Yell-uk

You can also download the ‘Wadawurrung Language – Intro’ App onto your phone to hear Yaluk (river), along with a number of other Wadawurrung words for common birds and animals, body parts and place names.

We’re excited to share that the Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk masterplan is now live on our website.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide their insight into the vision, proposed site uses and concept plan for the site. This feedback has helped inform the final masterplan pictured below.

Transforming the site and implementing the actions agreed with our community will be carried out progressively over a number of years. To learn more about the staging plan, please view the masterplan document on our project web page.

Creating public access

Before the park is opened to the public, we’ll need to create safe access points.

The car park entrance will be moved approximately 100 metres west along Swan Bay Road, towards Grubb Road, to ensure public safety and comply with local council traffic approval processes. Now that we have an approved location, we can start planning ahead for the construction of a new public carpark and walking paths, with construction anticipated from early to mid-2024.

The parkland will be open to the broader public from late 2024, once the works have been completed.

We will keep the community updated as we progress towards an opening date. We look forward to celebrating the opening of this new cultural and environmental place with you!
