Wind turbine to be dismantled in February 2025

4 February 2025

Barwon Water will be dismantling the Black Rock wind turbine in February 2025. Works to dismantle the structure will commence in mid-February and will take two weeks to complete.

The wind turbine head and blades will be used to construct a ground-mounted monument on the existing concrete slab, which will celebrate the turbine’s significance as Australia’s first grid connected wind turbine. Installation of the monument will take place in March 2025.

We appreciate that the local community use the wind turbine as a landmark at the Blackrock Road and Thirteenth Beach Road intersection. The monument will continue to act as a landmark.

All work will take place within Barwon Water’s land.

Our contractors will be using a large crane to dismantle the wind turbine. There will be no impacts to traffic conditions as part of these works; however, please be mindful of trucks entering and exiting the area.

Community feedback

We engaged with local community groups and neighbours to understand how we could best recognise the wind turbine’s historical and cultural significance.

We heard that community members wanted a plaque to recognise and explain the history of the wind turbine. We’ll install a plaque alongside the wind turbine monument detailing its history and significance to Barwon Water’s renewable energy story.

Renewable electricity remains an important part of what we do. We now use 100% renewable electricity across all our facilities and services, supplied from a diverse portfolio of renewable electricity sources, including our 3-megawatt Black Rock solar farm.
