Mulch biofilter installation completed

19 December 2025

Barwon Water is temporarily storing sludge from the wastewater treatment process in a lagoon across the road from the Black Rock Water Reclamation Plant. The mulch biofilter has now been fully installed at the sludge stockpile area. This follows extensive work with specialist consultants in sludge and odour management, who advised that the stockpile should remain undisturbed until its biological properties are stabilised. Removing the stockpile prematurely would risk a significant increase in odour, so this approach was chosen to minimise impacts to the neighbouring community.

The mulch biofilter, made from locally sourced organic woodchip and plant waste, acts as a barrier over the stockpile. It works through both physical absorption and biological processes, providing a surface for microorganisms to break down odours. Our rapid onsite trials demonstrated positive results in reducing odour emissions and we have now applied this solution to the stockpile.

We’ll continue to monitor the biofilter’s effectiveness and keep neighbours and the community updated as further actions are taken. Once the material is stabilised, our aim remains to reuse the biosolids, most likely as a beneficial soil conditioner via land application.
