About the project

Barwon Water is upgrading the Clifton Springs tank on McKiernan Street in Drysdale.

Upgrading the tank will increase water security in the region and continue to provide this critical water supply to our customers, in particular during peak periods where demand increases significantly.

As part of this work, a new roof will be built which will provide resiliency to climate change such as excessive temperatures, storms and high winds.

The upgrade will significantly reduce the safety risk of accessing the tank roof and emergency rescue from inside the tank by renewal of external stair, internal ladder, walkway around the roof and additional side access hatch on the wall.

The Tank

The tank was constructed with a steel wall and floor in 1965 with the existing roof constructed in 1995. The tank directly supplies approximately 11,900 customers in Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Portarlington, Indented Head, and Saint Leonards. It is Barwon Water's largest water tank with a capacity of 32ml, is 68 Meters in diameter and 10 meters tall.

Construction period

The tank internal upgrade will need to take place between the months of May to November to ensure the tank is in working order before the high demand season begins. External work on the tank can occur during the busy season.

The Clifton Springs / Drysdale network will continue to be supplied via the Bellarine transfer main, utilising the site’s tank bypass system, meaning customers will not experience any difference to their normal water supply.
