Project update
Barwon Water commenced construction on the Colac Renewable Organics Network (RON) in August 2022. With infrastructure of the facility complete, it is now operational and delivering on its promise of producing renewable electricity. Collaboration with the Australian Lamb Company (ALC) and Bulla Dairy Foods continues, converting their organic trade waste into valuable renewable energy.
A final element to the system is scheduled to enter operation in 2026 and following that the Colac RON will be ready to reach its full potential. Future renewable energy operations are expected to produce up to 5.5 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough to power the entire Colac Water Reclamation Plant and meet the equivalent needs of approximately 1,100 households. This not only keeps Barwon Water customers' bills affordable but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions at the site by up to 4,200 tonnes annually.
This will further strengthen Barwon Water’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and regional growth, while showcasing the success of industry collaboration in driving innovation and environmental outcomes.
