Project update

Barwon Water commenced construction on the Colac Renewable Organics Network (RON) in August 2022. With infrastructure of the facility complete, it is now operational and delivering on its promise of producing renewable electricity. Collaboration with the Australian Lamb Company (ALC) and Bulla Dairy Foods continues, converting their organic trade waste into valuable renewable energy.

One final construction component remains to bring the project to full completion. This last stage is on track to be finished by the end of 2025. Until then, the system is still operating effectively, generating renewable electricity and transferring heat energy for heating water to ALC, reducing their reliance on natural gas and supporting local industry.

Future renewable energy operations are expected to produce up to 5.5 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough to power the entire Colac Water Reclamation Plant and meet the equivalent needs of approximately 1,100 households. This not only keeps Barwon Water customers' bills affordable but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions at the site by up to 4,200 tonnes annually.

Once the final construction piece is completed, the Colac RON will be poised to reach its full potential, with the project’s complete benefits anticipated to be realised from 2026 onwards. This will further strengthen Barwon Water’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and regional growth, while showcasing the success of industry collaboration in driving innovation and environmental outcomes.
