Forrest Water Update

8 January 2025

We’re continuing to experience impacts of elevated manganese levels in the raw water being received at the Forrest Water Treatment Plant from the West Barwon Reservoir.

These elevated levels are due to a naturally occurring reservoir “turn over” event as a consequence of low storage levels and recent warm and sunny weather.

A reservoir turn over event refers to the natural mixing process in a body of water, where the water at the top (warm surface water) and the water at the bottom (cooler bottom water) swap places.

As a result, customers may notice a yellow tinge. Despite the slight discolouration the water remains safe to drink.

Although the water treatment plant was recently upgraded, it was not designed to treat Manganese at such elevated levels.

Our local operators are continuing to optimise the treatment process for the most effective removal of Manganese. At the same time, we are bringing in water from alterative supplies and undertaking water mains cleaning to aid the return to your usual drinking water quality – you may notice our crews working various parts of Forrest.

We’ll continue to optimise our treatment process while the reservoir settles naturally.

We’ll continue to keep the local Forrest community informed and we’re also working with the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority as this water is entering the downstream into the western branch of the Barwon River, there is no impact to the local environment as a result.
