Barwon Water and Colac Otway Shire Council are partnering with the Forrest community to investigate opportunities for wastewater improvements in the township.

This partnership acknowledges the growing role tourism plays in Forrest and the regional economy, and the increasing stress this may place on existing wastewater systems in the town.

Members from the Forrest community have formed the Forrest Wastewater Group to facilitate early discussions with Barwon Water and the Colac Otway Shire.

These groups are working together along with the broader Forrest community to better understand wastewater issues for the community and options to identify solutions.

Consultation on wastewater solutions are well underway with the Forrest community.

So far the community has participated in an online survey, vision workshop and information sessions.

The wastewater audit (undertaken by Kernow Environmental Services) was completed in November, 2017 and found that there were significant and widespread issues relating to onsite wastewater management across the town (read the wastewater audit results summary here).

Feedback from the community consultation has been mixed. While all agree the environment and character of Forrest needs to be protected, there are differing views as to both the extent of the problem, and the cause. What’s not in dispute it that any solution must avoid cost to the community and residents (read the full community feedback report here).

A draft community wastewater vision statement and associated aspects has been developed in light of the survey and workshop feedback, we are now inviting the community to provide feedback on this draft vision in order to finalise so the vision can be used to assess and develop wastewater solutions for the town.

To provide feedback, please complete the survey or leave a comment.

Barwon Water will be in Forrest throughout February and early March in the lead up to the next community session where the community will have the opportunity to develop wastewater options for the town.

Dates and times of these sessions will be communicated shortly.

The Forrest wastewater community open house was held last night.

Attended by local residents and business owners, the open house provided the community with an update on the wastewater investigation project, next steps and an opportunity to speak with Barwon Water on the project.

There were lots of great conversations had, with key themes focusing on what people value about the community, current wastewater systems and affordable and innovative wastewater options.

Barwon Water is currently collating feedback from the open house and the recent online survey. These findings will be discussed in further detail at the upcoming community visioning workshop on Tuesday, December 12.

The workshop will see community members collaborate with one another to better understand the problems and impacts surrounding Forrest's existing wastewater system and how a successful project could contribute to the community in the future. The details of the workshop are:

    When: Tuesday, December 12, 2017

    Time: 5.30pm to 8.00pm

    Where: 14 Grant Street, Forrest
