Gellibrand River FLOWS Study update February 2026

24 February 2026

In October 2025, Alluvium produced a Site Paper for the Gellibrand FLOWS Study, which describes the reaches and sites selected for further assessment and provides a rationale for their selection. The Environmental Flows Technical Panel (EFTP) – made up of members with expertise in geomorphology, vegetation and aquatic ecology – then assessed the sites in person over several days.

In November 2025, the project advisory group met to discuss environmental flow objectives. To inform this discussion, Alluvium presented the EFTP's observations from the site visit and their thoughts on environmental objectives, together with an overview of relevant strategic objectives from existing policies and strategies. Input from the project advisory group will inform a future Issues Paper documenting the environmental values and condition of the river, the key issues impacting flow, and the river’s environmental flow objectives.

The next steps for the FLOWS Study will see representative cross-sections of the river surveyed to help generate a hydraulic model (used by the EFTP to determine the flow recommendations). Due to higher flows in the river late last year, the surveys were delayed until January, however bushfire in the catchment will likely see these surveys postponed until autumn 2026.
