Sewerage system maintenance and upgrade program

Works commencing

Barwon Water is undertaking essential sewer maintenance and upgrade works across the Geelong region, from September 2022 to mid-2024. These essential works will help improve sewerage services for customers and reduce risks of leaks and spills in the area.

This work will be delivered across a number of suburbs including Geelong CBD, Newtown, South Geelong, North Geelong, North Shore, Belmont, and Breakwater.

We have appointed Interflow as our principal contractor to carry out this essential work.

As part of these works, our contractors will need to access some private properties that have maintenance holes for the sewer mains located within their backyards. These properties will receive further notification in regards to the details of the works and timing.

What is involved?

There is a series of steps involved to complete the works and there is different work involved across the number of suburbs. This includes and sewer relining and support works.

It is not always possible to provide notification each time we come back to the location of the works, due to schedules shifting to respond to access requirements for property owners, or the need to stay longer at a certain location. However, we will do our best to keep you informed.

What to expect during the works

  • During works there will be noise from trucks and equipment on site. We apologise for this inconvenience and will try to keep it to a minimum.
  • If any pedestrian footpath or road closures are required, we will put in place the necessary traffic management to support this.
  • In some suburbs, there is temporary loss of on-street parking due to work zones. We apologise for this inconvenience.
  • If night works at a maintenance hole is required, we will be in touch with the local residents and businesses. Closer to the date, we will then contact those who have a maintenance hole outside their property with further details and dates. During the night works, you may notice increased lighting near the maintenance holes. We will try to minimise impacts to local residents.
  • If private property access is impacted due to the works, we will be in touch with those businesses or residents to discuss temporary access arrangements ahead of the works commencing.
  • In most instances, works are completed above ground level. However, if the condition of the existing sewer pipe is deteriorated or there are blockages in the pipe, then it may require urgent excavation to avoid any sewage overflows. If this happens, our contractor will discuss this with you, prior to starting works near your property.
  • To ensure public safety, we have installed temporary fencing around work zones.
  • We will reinstate the area upon completion of works, ensuring footpaths and roads are left in good condition.
