South Geelong Urban Design Framework receives final approval

22 August 2025

The Minister for Planning has approved recommendations to amend the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme to incorporate the South Geelong Urban Design Framework (UDF).

The amendments to the planning scheme include the rezoning of Barwon Water land to mixed use zone, the application of planning overlays, including heritage and design controls and other updates to local planning provisions. The South Geelong UDF, originally endorsed by City of Greater Geelong council in 2022, has undergone extensive community consultation and refinement since 2019. This includes an Independent Planning Panel process in 2024, which culminated in Council adopting the plan in April 2025. Now, with approval from the Planning Minister, the framework is ready to move to implementation.
